Professor Cardenete is Professor of Economics at University Loyola and University Pablo de Olavide (on leave). He has been recently has been appointed Councillor and President of Camara de Cuentas of Andalusia.Visiting Research Professor at Georgetown University (2023). He has been Minister of Education and Sports (2022) and previously Vice Minister of the Vice Presidency-Ministry of Tourism, Regeneration, Justice and Local Administration (2019-2022), both positions at Junta de Andalucía. Member of the Committee of the Regions of the European Union, being Spokesperson for Renew Europe Group in NAT Commission (2019-2022) and President of NECSTouR (2021-2022). Before this, he was Vice Chancellor of Graduate Studies and Director of the Loyola Leadership School at University Loyola (2016-2019).
He obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Business (1994) at the University of Seville, Doctorate in Economics (2000) at the University of Huelva and he got also a Diploma in Senior Management at the San Telmo International Institute (2011). The title of his thesis was “The General Equilibrium Models Applied in Andalusia”. VicePresident of the Hispanoamerican Input-Output Society (since 2019). He is a Numerary Academic of the Andalusian Academy of Regional Science (since 2017) being its President in 2024. He was President of the Andalusian Regional Science Association (2016-2019). In 2019 he was elected Collegiate Economist of the Year by the Seville College of Economists. Graduated with Honor from the Escuela Superior de Hostelería in 2021. Graduated with Honor in the Fiftieth Anniversary of Faculty of Business and Economics University of Seville (2021). Honor Ambassador of NECSTOUR (2022).
In his research work, he stands out as Principal Researcher of the Research Group CLIMAMODEL SEJ-511 (Multisectoral Models for Climate Change) (2011-), Associate Researcher at EUREAL (European Union Regional Economics Applications Laboratory), in GReCS (Research Group on Computing and Simulations) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (2000-2010) and of the Institute of Energy Economics and Environment of the University of Seville (2017-). He is also Distinguished Research Professor at HISPAREAL (Hispalis Regional Economics Applications Laboratory) (since 2019) and Associate Researcher at CISE-Universidad Autónoma de Coahuila (Mexico) (2018-).
He has been Visiting Research Scholar at Sophia University (Japan, 2023-2024), Colegio de México (2015-2016), University of Strathclyde (United Kingdom) (2011), Regional Economics Applications Laboratory -REAL- of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA) (2002) and of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (1998). He has worked as an External Consultant at the European Commission (2014-2018) and at Asian Development Bank (2018 and 2022).
He has also been Associate Researcher of CEDRUS-Autonomous University of Mexico-UNAM (Mexico) (2016-2019), of the Autonomous University of Chile (2016-2018). Senior Economist at the European Institute of Public Administration (Maastricht, The Netherlands) (2012-2013) and at European Commission (JRC-IPTS) (2011-2012).
As a teacher, he has been Professor at the Pablo de Olavide University (2000-2013), EOI School of Industrial Organization (2001-2013) and the University of Huelva (1995-2000) and has given numerous seminars at different universities, research centers and international institutions.
Regarding university responsibilities, he has been Deputy Director of the Menéndez y Pelayo University (2001-2004), General Director of the University-Society Foundation of the Pablo de Olavide University (2004-2006), General Director of Coordination and Administrative Organization of the University Pablo de Olavide (2006-2007), Executive Vice President of Foundations of the Pablo de Olavide University, CEO of UPOGEST, S.L., services company of the Pablo de Olavide University (2007-2011). At University Loyola, he was first Director of its Department of Economics (2013-2016).
Likewise, he has worked as a Technical Advisor for the Andalusian Regional Ministry of Economy (2002-2005 and 2007-2009), Counselor of the Economic and Social Council of the Seville City Council (2009-2012), Counselor of the Institute of Cartography and Statistics of Andalusia (2015-2018), President of the Business Strategy Commission of the Confederation of Businessmen of Andalusia (2014-2018), President of the Economic Commission of the College of Economists of Seville (2018-2019), Member of the Board Director of the College of Economists of Seville (2018-2019), President of the Analysis and Prospective Commission of the Confederation of Businessmen of Andalusia (2019), President of the Andalusian Association of Regional Science (2014-2020), and President of the Economic Commission of the Seville College of Economists (2022-2023).
He is a member of the Spanish Association of Regional Science, Regional Science Association International, International Input-Output Association (member of the Executive Committee, 2016-2019), Hispano-American Society of Input-Output (Vice President since 2016), Andalusian Association of Regional Science (President 2014-2020) and Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Risk and Financial Management, Innovation Magazine, Regional Studies Magazine, American Journal of Economics and Business Administration, Portuguese Magazine of Regional Studies, Socioeconomic Perspectives, Asian Journal of Economics, Business and Accounting and Associate Editor of Business Economic Research. Associate Editor of the Springer Series «Applied General Equilibrium Series»(2018-). He was a Member of the Editorial Committee of the Blog La Riqueza de las Regiones (2015-2018).
His lines of research are Input-Output Models, Social Accounting Matrix Models (SAM) and Applied General Equilibrium Models (CGE) at an international, national and regional level using the GAMS, PyIO and SIMSIPSAM programs as softwares.
